This year’s International Builders’ Show revealed some exciting new products and features that are gaining popularity in homes across the country. With so many unique materials and designs, the possibilities are endless. If you are considering a custom home build or are looking for some stylish home improvement projects to modernize your décor, keep an eye on these home trends in 2016:
- Waterfall islands. Although not a new trend, it’s proven to be one with staying power and is making a huge comeback. Islands made of wood, granite, or marble are in high demand by homeowners.
- Trough water features. Outdoor tables including trough-like water paths that end in waterfalls off the edge are the next big thing in outdoor décor.
- Copper bathtubs. Freestanding copper tubs work for a variety of decors, from traditional to rustic. They are a great way to turn any bathroom into a stylish and charming retreat.
- Intricate stairways. Stairways featuring iron posts, detailed tile designs, and other new design features are all the rage. Custom homebuilders are placing staircases closer to the front of a home to offer a unique focal point.
- Artisan accents. Handmade items like macramé wall hangings and woven basketry from local artists are a big trend in home design. To accommodate, big box stores are now stocking up on artisan-like products, but for the real thing, check out craft fairs, flea markets, and tradeshows for unique décor items.
- Interior board and batten siding. Once restricted to the exterior of a home, board and batten siding has made its way into interior designs. Rustic, yet contemporary, this design trend provides texture to otherwise bland walls.
- Fluid indoor/outdoor spaces. The newest trend is to bring the outside in! Features like retractable floor-to-ceiling glass walls and screens, new floor materials, and stackable doors blur the line between indoors and outdoors that can change to fit the homeowner’s mood.
- Barn doors. Sliding barn doors are great for closets, bedrooms, and kitchens. Rustic yet elegant, they are a unique way to close off a room.
- Green & sustainable design. Low-impact designs have been receiving a lot of buzz over the past few years. Homeowners are increasingly requesting designs that incorporate the natural landscape, native species, and other green features.
- Exotic and repurposed wood accents. Flooring, cabinetry, and even ceilings are just some of the places where repurposed and exotic wood can really shine. Many designers are incorporating wood accents with stark white interiors for a look that is both natural and contemporary.
