 As you’ve already experienced in your mailbox, inbox, and on social media, Spring is also the start of ‘home improvement discount season’ designed to fill companies’ pipelines with signed contracts and projects to last for months.

Remember the old “bait and switch” that car dealers used to use to lure you into the showroom? An advertisement for a car with an enticing price tag or low monthly payments – but when you rush to the dealership the car is no longer available.

  • But how would you know? 
    What steps should you take to protect yourself prior to inviting someone to your home, and especially before signing a contract?

Follow these important tips and questions:

  1. Read the fine print (yes, the tiny print at the bottom of each advertisement). Here you’ll find what companies don’t want you to know, usually all kinds of exclusions;  information that a sales rep is likely to use in order to up-sell you on a much more expensive product.
  2. How long has the company been in business? Check their Consumer Affairs record in addition to social media and online reviews.
  3. Check the company’s website; is this a well-established and reputable business? Do they provide a true business address where you can find them if a problem arises?
    TIP: Use Google or Apple Maps to verify this is a real office and not a residential address; if you show up at their home, this could be considered trespassing.
  4. Don’t be fooled by what appears to be a big discount, especially for well-known brands; a $500 discount per window or buy-one-get-one often indicates an inflated list price for windows that cost $15500-$2,000 each.
